"Flipped classroom" is a term used frequently, often without thought as to the planning and thought that goes into every lesson. Many think of the flipped classroom as video lectures before class and homework in the classroom. However, a flipped lesson can be so much more than that if carefully constructed. This session will discuss reasons for flipping student learning, as well as considerations for topics and lessons that can be flipped. The structure of a flipped lesson will be introduced along with ideas for different assessment strategies that can be implemented. The best flipped lessons take advantage of many types of formative assessment; pre-class assessment, post-class assessment, and in-classroom active learning techniques. This session will focus on different methods of assessment available for each of the three timeframes. When "flipping" it is important to consider how you will use assessment to both gauge and encourage student learning.
